18.10-1.11.24 Japan |\u00a0Anita Gratzer developed the work cycle \u2018Gl\u00f6ckler\u2019 originally for the 2023 Nakanojo Biennale, which was themed around Cosmographia, a 16th-century geographical encyclopaedia. In regard to this book, which describes the peoples and customs of the world, she reinterpreted a 150-year-old tradition from her native region in Austria from a Japanese perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In her studio in Gunma, she produced six sculptures for a procession, crafted from antique Japanese books from the early Meiji period, for exhibition at the Biennale in Nakanojo. In creating these floats, she also made reference to the first intercultural relations that Japan experienced at the Vienna World Fair in 1873, 150 years ago. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Last winter, she was tasked with creating two new caps that combined Japanese and Austrian methods and materials for a exhibition, next to her home region in the Alps. As part of the European Capital of Culture Festival 2024 in Salzkammergut, Austria, those new caps and pictures of the referential works made in Nakanojo, Gunma were presented to the public over the year. Being very strict about the design and construction of the original caps, the local \u201cGl\u00f6ckler\u201d authorities were quite challenged by Anita Gratzer’s interpretation, utilizing centuries-old scripts through foldable engineering. Doing so as a female artist, she stirred up some debate in the region about a tradition, that has only been open to women for a few years. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
