Change of the Guards

Replacing the main posts at the corner was a challenging task, and not only for structural reasons. Part of the old post should be semi-preserved, which led us to an experimental trial, using epoxy resin to stabilize the rotten structure of the wood. Some beams were also unusable in parts of the corner, so Adam made a kind of prosthesis with new parts conected by traditional joinery. We want to keep as much of the 90-year-old design as possible, but for safety reasons we have to replace some parts and even rebuild some of them. For example, to build a huge cabinet with a span of two tatami, the house was missing a beam at its most vulnerable point. We changed this design weakness by establishing a new position to stabilize the roof. In the pictures you can see the new post and the restored one from the inside structure, which previously supported most of the weight at that corner of the house.
