Izumo no Okuni is considered the inventor of the new theatrical art form Kabuki (“the art of singing and dancing”). In the early 17th century, she created a new style with an all-female troupe from all social classes. She offered disadvantaged women a decent way to earn money without losing face or dignity – through acting and dancing. The troupe soon developed extraordinary skills and created dance performances and dramas that often dealt with risqué themes. The women in their troupe played both male and female roles, sending a clear message that they could overcome the social barriers of gender equality. They soon gained popularity throughout Japan.

Some pieces consisted of parodies of religious performances or stories related to famous historical events. Izumo no Okuni depicted the everyday life of Japanese people and dealt with some very sensitive issues about social status, gender equality, and more. Many people claim that her work was a criticism of Japanese politics, government and society.
