Biennale | Nakanojo 2025 JP

studio :: Stationary garments are produced that can be used by visitors to the Nakanojo Biennale. These are forms of textile architecture that are mounted on wooden frames, hang from the ceiling or standing freely in the room. These textile sculptures, which wrap around the body and extend it like prostheses, can be used by visitors. Consisting largely of antique handwritten paper, they are combined with textiles such as silk, hemp and loden. The work refers to the Western influence on Japan which led to the standardisation of customs and clothing by the state from 1871 onwards. Until then, men’s and women’s clothing had been very similar and egalitarian, but Western clothing was defined as modern and masculine. In turn, women were equated with tradition and western clothing was only acceptable for them at work and school. Feminine grace became a national identity, kimono exoticism a tourist market value.
