Ōkuchi 大口
Onishi.Japan
2025.10
This is a reimagined, extra-long version of the Ōkuchi 大口 Hakama, traditionally worn in Noh Theater. Historically, Ōkuchi were crafted from white silk for priests or in vibrant red for high-ranking women. Created specifically for a Butoh dancer, this adaptation extends the lower garment into a performative component through its exaggerated length. It evolves into a dramaturgical element that, during improvisation, serves to manipulate the body’s visibility and amplify its mimetic expression.
